Bloggers can make an insane amount of money! But how do I create a WordPress blog for myself? I will show you how you can quickly and easily!
First of all, don’t create your blog on Blogger, Blogspot or a pre-designed blog system. You need to treat your Blog as a business, not just a place to write your thoughts. You will want to direct people to your site by the domain you choose and not have to use a pre-designed blog system for your domain. In order to do this, you need a domain and hosting for your blog. Your hosting needs to provide a free platform called WordPress.
WordPress is the #1 Blog platform on the internet today, it allows you to create a whole website easily for your business as a blogger which can include paid advertising widgets, ways to do affiliate marketing, shopping cart functionality if you choose to sell products and much more! WordPress has an amazing back-end control panel for people who don’t want to learn or use code. It’s just like using MicrosoftWord to create your blog posts, giving you a lot of functionality without knowing any html or coding. You will love WordPress! Below are the steps on how to start.
This blog post “How Do I Create a WordPress Blog?” is very comprehensive with a lot of detail to make the process easy for you each step of the way. There are only 5 steps, but with all the detail it can look daunting (but it really isn’t), so I wanted to provide you with a list of steps, so you can see just how easy it is:
- Choose a Theme: Decide what your blog will be about
- Branding: Pick a catchy name
- Pick your Domain: Search domains for availability
- Choose and Purchase your Hosting: This is where your blog will sit
- Install WordPress: Step by step instructions
So lets get started!
CHOOSE A THEME
Think about the theme of your blog. Pick something you love, are knowledgeable about or are passionate about, so you will enjoy writing every week. Many years ago I designed a website for a blogger who loved old trains and the history of trains. He wrote blogs every week about his passion and it didn’t take very long for him to have over 1,000,000 hits a month.
Keep in mind that some blogs, such as Food Blogs, will be hard to earn a living on as there is a ton of competition out there. That doesn’t mean you can’t do it, but if you are new to blogging, I would try to pick a niche topic. The narrower the niche the better. You don’t need to reach everyone, 10,000 followers that actively read your blog can bring you a lot of money. If you have to choose something like a Food blog because it’s your passion, then try to make it unique, like a Vegan Blog or Gluten Free Blog, etc. Here are some ideas to jump start your thinking on how to create your own WordPress blog:
- Health and Wellness
- Art or Theater
Once you choose the main topic for your blog, then try to narrow down to a niche group. So if you choose “Finances”, try to pick something like “Finances for College Students”. This will help you get a preferred target audience so you can focus on that group of people, which will make you more unique and desirable. It also brings less competition than the general term “Finances”. You could even narrow it down further to “Finances for College Students who have over $100,000 in loans to pay back” or “Finances for College Students who are single parents”. This is just an example, but the more you narrow down a niche, the better and more unique you will be.
Come up with a catchy name. Mine is “It’s the Journey Blog”. This works for me because I want to write about creating a lifestyle of online entrepreneurship, travel and happiness. If you choose a topic you love, the catchy name will not be hard to think of, unless you over analyze everything. LOL! Make it short and simple and direct. You want people to remember it easily. If you are an internet personality, you could use your name for the blog. I will be writing a comprehensive post on branding soon and will link it here.
CHOOSE YOUR DOMAIN
Try to find a domain to match your blog. Most good domain names are gone. So try adding “blog” to the end, like I did, www.itsthejourneyblog.com. But always get a “.com”. As a Search Engine Optimization specialist I have worked with all domain types such as .co, .us, .net, biz, etc. Most people don’t remember anything other than “.com”, so choose a “.com” domain for your business. If you search any keywords in Google, you will notice that almost always all 1st page websites are “.com” sites.
In order to make this easy for you, I have provided a “domain checker” below for you to search your domain name ideas:
CHOOSE A HOSTING PLAN
Once you choose your domain, then you need hosting. Hosting is where your website will sit and be accessible to everyone 24 hours a day. If you are new to this term, think of it as a storage facility for all your pages and blog posts. I’ve been working with hosting companies for over 20 years and they all have their strengths and weaknesses. After all these years I choose to work with Bluehost. It is one of the larger companies but not too large that their customer service isn’t good. They have all the tools you will need and for Business Website hosting they charge anywhere from $2.75 and month to $13.95 a month. Most plans includes your domain, 24/7 support, 1 Domain Privacy, 1 Spam Experts and SiteBackup Pro. There are cheaper companies out there, but I’ve found you get what you pay for when it comes to hosting and Bluehost is superior by far for what you get.
Bluehost offers many different hosting plans, but if you are going to be a serious blogger, I would go with the Prime Recommended plan or the Pro Package. You can click on the blue and green graphic below to review their information and sign up. If you use my graphic link I get affiliate credit, which helps me continue to write blogs that help people like you! Affiliate marketing will also be a big thing for you as a blogger, which I will go into detail about on a separate blog post.
When you are ready to create your Bluehost account, read the helpful graphics and instructions below to make the setup quick and easy!
SETTING UP YOUR BLUEHOST ACCOUNT
You will be given the option to get a new domain (so use the domain searcher above to see if domain is available) or you can transfer a domain you already have. This is what it will look like:
Once you create your Bluehost account and you are logged into your new control panel, you will need to install the WordPress platform. Follow the easy steps below, it should only take about 5 minutes!
INSTALL WORDPRESS ON BLUEHOST
Bluehost uses an app called Mojo Marketplace to install WordPress. If you are logged into your control panel, look for “Mojo Marketplace” and click on it. It will take you to a page that looks like this:
Simply click on the WordPress icon and then the “Start” button to begin the installation process.
Next, choose where you want to install WordPress, this should be at your domain. Leave the second box blank so it will install to your root directory. Click on “Check Domain”.
WordPress will then take you to the account setup page for your blog, it will look like this:
Your Site Name or Title: This is where you put your “Catchy Name”
Admin Username: Here you can put your personal email address or any username
Admin Password: Create a password and write it down! Remember there are internet trolls and hackers, so don’t make it easy.
Admin Email Address: This email address will be used in case you forget your password and need to reset it.
Make sure to check off “Automatically create a new database for this installation”.
Then check “I have read the terms and conditions”
Press “Install Now”
Next the progress page will pop up:
Once the install is complete, you will be provided with your Site URL and your Log In Credentials. That’s it! You are now ready to explore WordPress and get started on your blogging!
